Ridley Scott returns to the sci-fi genre in PROMETHEUS (3D), a genre he’s best known for starring an all-power cast headed by Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Logan Marshall-Green, Idris Elba and Guy Pearce.

The team of scientists and explorers aboard the Prometheus are on nothing less than a journey to discover answers to some of life’s most profound questions. Two brilliant young scientists, Shaw (Rapace) and Holloway (Green) possessing contrasting motivations, lead the expedition. Shaw is a believer: she wants to meet these “gods” as a way of getting closer to her more traditional religious views, while Holloway is looking to debunk these kinds of spiritual notions. In their work as archeologists, they have discovered clues in cave pictograms from ancient civilizations across the world, all of which point to the same location in distant space, and have persuaded a corporation, Weyland Industries, to fund the mission.

Neither scientist was prepared for the unimaginable terrors they would encounter. “When Shaw and Holloway conceived the mission, their expectation was they would discover a benevolent species that might provide answers to some of our greatest mysteries,” says executive producer Michael Ellenberg. “In other words they were hoping to meet gods. But these beings prove to be anything but compassionate. They are a dangerous race of superbeings.”

“The crew of the Prometheus thinks they’re headed to paradise to discover answers to the ultimate questions. But what they find is a dark and twisted and frightening world – a way station for these beings,” adds scribe Jon Spaihts. “The cold and implacable environment is more like hell than heaven.”

In Ridley Scott’s films, including Prometheus, the protagonists’ discoveries often defy expectations. “That’s what makes good drama,” states the filmmaker. “Our story circles the truth of what might be out there and therein lays its most frightening aspect. Feasibility always creates the finest and most dangerous drama and the opportunity for me to scare the hell out of everyone.”

Available in 3D, Imax 3D and 2D platforms, “Prometheus” will open June 6 nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Woodstock. Live Aid. Few musical festivals aimed at creating solidarity through music create global appeal, worldwide sensation and massive unconditional support. But one such altruistic driven effort is on its way to stardom. Environmental concerns such as global warming, rising fuel prices and energy crises have brought the issue of the world to center stage. Literally. It’s already hit theatres – An Inconvenient Truth – and now already hit the concert scene in a big way. On the last Earth Day Jam 2012, the whole world jammed for the benefit of Mother Earth. Just short of holding hands across the world, this feat promises to create more noise for environmental conservation than an un-recycled tin can. From Los Angeles to New York, France to Israel, Earth day concerts big and small are being coordinated and endorsed by Earth Day Network, a global arm for Earth Day programs and events. Taguig is no exception as Earth Day Jam 2012 hit 9th Ave., Bonifacio High St., Bonifacio Global City last April 28, 2012.

This worldwide concerted effort aims to teach the significance of each and every person in this goal of preservation, conservation and sustainable existence. Practical steps and ways to prevent environment degradation become part of the show much like in the Taguig version of Earth Day concerts worldwide. It can be as pressing as worldwide environmental effects on the world or as simple as Reduce-Reuse-Compose. Whatever the case, these concerts create an impact in advocating key issues, most of which escape us on an everyday basis. A couple of “wake-up call” realizations thanks to Earth Day Jam 2012:

One pint of motor oil dumped into a storm drain can create a one-acre oil slick on open water. Drain the used oil into a clean milk jug using a funnel. Take it to one of the many oil-recycling centers in the area. Every gallon of oil you recycle saves 42 gallons in crude oil.

Did you know that toilets are the most common source of household water use? A leaking toilet can waste more than 150 gallons per day! Although you may not see or hear water running, your toilet may have a silent leak. To test for a silent leak, drop a little food coloring into the tank. Wait for about 20 minutes, and don’t flush. If the food coloring appears in the toilet bowl, your toilet has a leak. These leaks are easy to fix with parts from you local hardware store – make the repair and save water and money

At the office, each of use can do a few simply things to help conserve energy. Start by turning the lights off when you leave the room for more than a few minutes. Do not leave electric heaters on when not required. Turn off your computer, monitor and lights when you go home for the day. Dress yourself for variations in indoor temperatures. And if you’re the last person out at night, turn off the lights, printers, and photocopiers.

Complete with a rock-star studded bill, a complete representation of all music genres, this unified effort at creating environmental awareness took its twelfth run by taking it to the streets. Bonifacio High St,. This marathon which last more or less six hours brought advocacy to a new level. This project was spearheaded by Lou Bonnevie of Dimitri Productions and presented by the local government of Taguig in line with the city’s campaign to create awareness towards the environment. Another presenter of the concert was DENR along with various organizations, NGOs and corporate sponsors. This show had a lineup of 14 of the hottest artists today. Artists that rocked BGC were Kjwan, Imago, Bloomfields, Noel Cabangon, Nina, Juris, Sino Sikat, Tanya Markova, Mayonnaise, Peace Pipe, True Faith, Radio Active Sago Project, Nyko Maca & Gafeiera and Lou Bonnevie, the whole music scene was involved; truly a testament to the massive support Earth Day received both on a local and global scale.

Earth Day Jam 2012 taught few things about how you can make the world a better place in your own way. Earth Day Jam 2012 is a special project of Dimitri Productions in partnership with the local government of Taguig in association with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. For more information on Earth Day Jam 2012 visit www.dimitriproductions.com.

Fifty-nine-year-old filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld returns this week with the eagerly anticipated third instalment in the billion-dollar Men In Black franchise, bringing back the original tandem of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.

In the film, Agents J (Smith) and K (Jones) are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.

Question: When did you settle on time travel as the backdrop for the movie?

Barry Sonnenfeld: It was Will Smith’s idea on the set of Men In Black 2. One night Will Smith came up to me and said – he calls me ‘Baz’ he said, ‘You know, Baz, I’ve got an idea for Men In Black 3. I think that I should go back in the past and do something that has to do with saving Agent K. And by doing that we learn secrets that we didn’t know and J learns secrets about K. It would be great to do a time travel version.’ And I said, ‘Let’s get through 2!’ Then we all went off and did our own thing for many, many years but when Sony decided to do Men In Black 3, we all decided it shouldn’t be another episode of some villain on the loose, so the idea of time travelling came up again. It is such an exciting idea. They called me to ask me what era we wanted, and 1969 seemed perfect, especially as that was the advent of space travel, the start of our own adventure visiting planets in our own solar system. Also the music was great and the era was great. What I personally did not want to do was a movie that took place in ’69 with hippies and drugs.

Q: Scripting a time travel movie must be very difficult…

Sonnenfeld: Yes, to begin with only the first act was really good. With the second and third acts, especially with a time travel movie, we were constantly thinking that we had it all done and then one of us would wake up in the middle of the night and go, ‘Wait a minute, if we kill this guy then that guy is dead’. We watched Back To The Future dozens of times because that was our Bible for how a movie set the rules of time travel and succeeded. Also, we all felt that it was really important that we had Will Smith’s next movie after him having several years off as a producer. He was circling a bunch of movies but we wanted the next Will Smith movie and I knew that we’d get there. Will and I always said that the only way we could screw up is if we didn’t, in the past, have someone that was so good that you didn’t miss watching Will and Tommy, because the movie is about that great relationship.

Q: You obviously work terrifically with Will Smith, but what’s it like directing Tommy Lee Jones?

Sonnenfeld: It is funny because it was a little bit difficult directing Tommy Lee Jones on the first movie. We had a difference of opinion about his performance but the second and third movies were joyful. Tommy was always happy. He loves working with Will. He totally trusts me. I have photos of Tommy Lee Jones and me laughing! Miracles can happen! It wasn’t fake, because Tommy won’t fake anything. He loves the role, because the reaction shot is always funnier than the action shot. I was the cinematographer on When Harry Met Sally and as funny as Meg Ryan is faking an orgasm, every time you cut to Billy Crystal doing nothing it becomes funnier.

Q: Was Tommy upset that he’s not in all of Men In Black 3?

Sonnenfeld: I think Tommy wished he was in the whole movie but I think a) Tommy respected the script, b) he respected Josh [Brolin] as an actor and c) he loves the final result, has seen the movie and thinks it is really good. He wishes he was in the whole movie but understands the plot did not allow for that. It worked great because I think the audience does not view it as Tommy or Josh. I think they just view Agent K and it’s not like ‘I didn’t like Tommy but I liked Josh’, or ‘I didn’t like Josh but did like Tommy’. We were saying that Josh might not get the praise he deserves because some people will think that they saw the one same guy play the whole movie!

Q: Was it difficult convincing Josh Brolin to take on Tommy’s character?

Sonnenfeld: It was easy to convince him to play the character. I always knew that I wanted Josh as soon as I read the script. I saw him in W and thought he was extraordinary. He played George Bush and he wasn’t doing an impersonation. He really created a version of George Bush. That wasn’t exactly his accent. He created this amazing tension by eating in every scene in W. If you see it again, there’s this tension of him eating French Fries and talking or eating a tuna sandwich. It was extraordinary. I said, please let’s hire Josh Brolin.

Q: Men In Black 3 has great emotional depth. Do you worry about where you might take the franchise afterwards?

Sonnenfeld: I don’t worry about where we are going afterwards. It does feel like the end of a trilogy and it is kind of fun to go back and watch the first movie with the knowledge of what we now know at the end of the third movie. In fact, it is kind of fun to watch this movie again with the knowledge of what is going to come! I think the second movie didn’t have enough emotional depth so maybe this one makes up for the previous one. And Brolin is pretty great.

Q: Is it true that shooting the first scene on Men In Black 3 made you cry?

Sonnenfeld: The truth is, I did break into tears, tears of joy when I watched the first scene of Will and Josh together, which is the scene where Will is being interrogated at HQ by Josh. I was weeping because it had worked. I was weeping saying, ‘Oh, my God, we’ve got a movie!’

On the heels of its strong overseas opening of Dark Shadows and the momentum of its first quarter releases, Warner Bros. Pictures has surpassed the $1 billion threshold in overseas box office in less than five months, surpassing its 2010 Studio record by ten days. This marks the twelfth consecutive year the Division has grossed over $1 billion overseas, beginning in 2001. The announcement was made today by Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The Studio hits this high water mark as it gears up for a full slate of highly anticipated titles later in the year, including Adam Shankman’s Rock of Ages, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, Ben Affleck’s Argo, and Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The Division enjoyed a strong start early in the year with the continued overseas success of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which grossed $257 million in 2012 ($357 million total international box office). This was followed by impressive grosses on the 2D and 3D releases of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island ($222 million) and Wrath of the Titans ($218.3 million). Released in some territories day-and-date with the U.S., Dark Shadows has already grossed $37.3 million, with many markets yet to open. Earnings from 3D venues reached $324 million, representing nearly a third of the Division’s cumulative gross for 2012.

“Our success thus far this year would not be possible without the ingenuity of our filmmakers, and the hard work and dedication of our teams around the world,” Kwan Vandenberg said. “These remarkable results demonstrate the continued strength of the international business, particularly in rapidly expanding overseas markets and in 3D.”

Warner Bros Pictures International has been the market leader in six of the previous 11 years. The Studio has surpassed $1 billion at the international box office a total of 15 times, with four of those years exceeding $2 billion, including 2011. The studio earned $2.87 billion internationally last year, and was the number one studio in Europe.

The other title character to be cast was, of course, the Huntsman: Eric, a hunter who knows the Enchanted and Dark Forests like the back of his hands. Not only did the Huntsman once have respect for the animalshe tracked, he also still has the ability to think like one. But after his wife, Zara, died, Eric found his onlycomfort as a mercenary and a drunk. Now, the Huntsman has been tasked to follow Snow White into the forest and return her to Ravenna, who needs to consume her heart. But when Eric discovers the treachery of the Queen, he channels his rage into training a young woman who is determined to end what Ravenna began. Eric begins to see in Snow White an end to the darkness and to believe that the king’s standard could fly again.

Initially conceived as a character much older than Snow White, the Huntsman morphed during the screenplay’s development. Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, was courted for the part after the filmmakerswatched him in his career-defining role as the Nordic god of war. His charisma and on-screen presence convinced them that he could embody the tortured former soldier who finds salvation in a young woman called Snow White.

With his attitude, humor, intensity and physical presence, Hemsworth proved he could bring life to the character and serve as the ideal balance between Stewart and Theron. Shares Mercer of their choice: “We spent a fair amount of time exploring who should be the Huntsman and how to round out the triangle. Through the evolution of talking to many actors and getting their takes on it, we discovered Chris. He is becoming a huge star, and we knew we had to have him.”

Hemsworth’s first day on set was one of the most intimidating of the shoot: his big scene with Theron in which the Queen dispatches the Huntsman. Producer Joe Roth knew that Hemsworth was up for the challenge of matching wits with the Oscar® winner. The producer compliments: “The guy is built like a linebacker, he’s gorgeous to look at, and he has great depth of character. Chris is the guy that puts up 110 percent all the time.”

Discussing his part, Hemsworth says: “The Huntsman is a lost soul. He has given up on life and himself. When we first meet him, he’s a drunk, living alone in the woods working as a mercenary, hunting and tracking. He is then assigned the role of finding Snow White and bringing her back to the Queen.” Offering his reason for tackling the role, Hemsworth states: “I liked the idea of playing the reluctant hero: rough around the edges but with a good heart underneath. We tried to push the inconsistencies of his character, keep him unpredictable.”

Hemsworth also appreciated the “classic Western character” that the writers had drawn and the visual style that his director ensured. The performer adds: “I read it with director Rupert Sanders, and I saw visually how creative he was. We had discussions about character and story, and I was inspired by what he said. I’ve worked with plenty of people who have done far more films than Rupert, but many are not nearly as equipped, focused or innovative as he is. He’s unreal. I love these types of films: big, fantastical, epic stories that have a real heart at the center of them. They’re relatable characters, and the story is about hope and inspiration and love and tragedy. These are the things that we all deal with, but the story is told on an incredible, vivid background.”
Although Hemsworth and Stewart carefully practiced their fight scenes together, mistakes were made during production. During a particularly vigorous take, Stewart accidentally punched the seasoned kickboxer in the face. His nose swelled up, and his wound had to be covered up with makeup. Stewart was truly a match for this Huntsman.

“Snow White and the Huntsman” is released and distributed by United International Pictures through SolarEntertainment Corp. Showing on June 1, 2012 nationwide.

Noomi Rapace won rave reviews and came to worldwide attention for her performance as Lisbeth Salander in the original Swedish language Millennium films – “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest.” After working for a decade in her nativeSwedenshe is now in huge demand forHollywoodmovies including Ridley Scott’s return to sci-fi in the suspenseful futuristic mythology “Prometheus” in 3D.

The role was playing Elizabeth Shaw, a key character in Sir Ridley Scott’s eagerly awaited Prometheus. Shaw is an archaeologist who joins the crew of a spaceship – The Prometheus – bound for a distant planet that may provide the answer to the biggest question of all, the origins of mankind.

Rapace joins a stellar ensemble cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba and newcomer Logan Marshall-Green.

The chance to work with Scott, a filmmaker she has admired since she was a child, was too good to miss and the experience has been everything, and more, that she hoped for.

Rapace, 32, was born inHudiksvall,Swedenand studied drama inStockholm. She made her TV debut in the drama Tre Kronor in 1998 and has worked extensively in Swedish theatre. Her films include “Daisy Diamond,” the Millennium trilogy, “Beyond,” “Babycall” (a performance that earned her the Best Actress Award at the Rome Film Festival in 2011) and “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.”

Q: There’s been a lot of speculation about the film’s relationship to Alien. So is your character, Elizabeth, like a Ripley character in a way? Is she cut from the same cloth?

A: I think Shaw is more feminine in a way. She’s a scientist. She’s an archaeologist. I think that Ripley was, in a way, harder from the start and from the beginning and she was a loner. Shaw starts this journey to be with Holloway and she loves him. They’re a team and they’re doing this together. I think she goes from being quite innocent and full of hope and belief, to getting into something that is a bit darker, but she’s still a believer. She’s has an angel watching over her all the time in a way that she believes in. But I think she’s related to Ripley in a way. I think that all Ridley’s women are quite tough or they can stand up for themselves and they’re quite good at fighting back.

Q: Your character drives the movie in a way, it’s your quest that they’re setting out on, isn’t it?

A: Yes. In a way, I think she is the heart in the movie and as well, the one you read things through. So she’s probably the engine in a way and also the one who starts everything. She approaches Mr. Wayland. She convinces him to actually put all his money in this mission and it is probably his last journey because he’s quite old.

Q: Do you have some background for your character?

A: Shaw lost her father when she was quite young. He was a Christian missionary. I think if something dramatic happens in an early age, it’s like you have two options in a way. But she chooses the other way because she was a loved child and her father gave her the gift of faith and belief, and she’s held onto that. She believes there’s a purpose to everything. At the end of the day it’s about what she chooses to believe, who she is, and what she makes out of things instead of seeing herself as a victim.

Q: Isn’t the mission a direct challenge to her Christian beliefs?

A: It is, but also I think that the engineers she meets are, from my point of view, almost like angels. Who created them? So she’s tracking down where it all started.

Q: It’s an ensemble cast. How does that interaction with the rest of the cast work for you and how does it work for the character you play?

A: Elizabeth is very much a team player and she’s very professional. Ridley found a fantastic mix of people for this project and it was pure joy to work with them because they are amazing actors. I certainly don’t see myself as the lead, you know. It wasn’t like that. It was very much what we all created together. I feel very lucky because I’m surrounded by people who are just amazing, incredible actors. And Ridley was the perfect leader because he gave everybody something and then we all brought it together.

Q: Did you train long and hard for this part?

A: After I finished Sherlock, I started training for Prometheus. I did a lot of running because I didn’t want to build up too much, I didn’t want to be big but I wanted to be able to cope with the physical demands of the shoot. In Prometheus, the crew had to be ready for whatever is coming because they don’t know what they are going to meet. So yes, I did a lot of running, like five days a week.

Q: Prometheus is a big studio film. Does that represent a different challenge from making smaller independent films?

A: Not really. It’s all about connecting with the script and the character and I don’t care if it’s a big studio movie or if it’s a small independent movie. At the end of the day, it’s the same thing. It’s the script and the director and the actors and you have to find a way of making it yours.

“Prometheus” 3D lands very soon in theatres on June 7 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
